Broadway Musical

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

This revival opened in April for the Roundabout Theatre Company at Broadway’s Studio 54. It stars four-time Tony award winner Audra McDonald in the role of a plain Jane spinster who is desperately seeking true love. 110 in the Shade is a musical version on N. Richard Nash’s 1954 play The Rainmaker with lyrics and music by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones; the same team that brought us the 1960 off-Broadway sensation The Fantastics.

This charming production takes place during a heat wave in 1930’s Texas. While the whole town is hoping and praying for rain Lizzie Curry is on the verge of becoming an old maid. Lizzie is a strong character who is intelligent, witty and an impeccable homemaker, but despite all of her good qualities she can’t seem to find true love. She has just about given up on the idea when a charismatic rainmaker by the name of Starbuck comes to town promising to end the drought. Lizzie’s life is turned upside down as she is forced to evaluate her relationships with the local sheriff a divorced man who is afraid to take a chance on love for fear that he will get hurt again, and the con man who is promising to make rain for a fee of $100. Her life is changing. After years of being plain and alone she suddenly has two attractive men vying for her affections, but can she choose?

110 In The Shade first appeared on Broadway in October of 1963 and starred Inga Swenson and Will Geer both of whom were nominated for Tony awards as were co-creators Schmidt and Jones for Best Composer and Lyricist. The first production had a successful 330 show run. This time around 110 In The Shade features an impressive cast that is sure to duplicate the magic of the original production. McDonald made her Broadway debut in 1994 in Carousel for which she won her first Tony. She went on to win three more for her roles in Master Class, Ragtime and most recently as Ruth in A Raisin in the Sun. These four Tony’s place her in the elite company of Angela Lansbury, Gwen Verdon and Mary Martin who have all achieved the quadruple status. This is McDonald’s first Broadway appearance since winning the Tony in 2004 for A Raisin in the Sun. Broadway veteran and two-time Tony award winner John Cullum portrays H.C. Curry in the production. The show also features Steve Kazee who is best known for his 2006 stint as Sir Lancelot in Broadway’s Spamalot.

110 in the Shade is an old fashioned romance story with a memorable score that has lyrics taken right from the original plays dialogue. This enhances the musical and keeps the story intact. This production is a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to close in July of 2007. So, don’t miss the opportunity to experience a wonderful show with an extraordinary cast. You’ll be glad you saw it!
