33 Variations
JANE FONDA RETURNS TO BROADWAY! After more than a forty-five year absence Oscar and Emmy Award winning actress Jane Fonda returns to the Broadway stage in a compelling new drama. 33 Variations began previews at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in February and is scheduled to officially open on March 9, 2009. The story deals with a musicologist obsessed with Beethoven who must race against time to unravel a mystery that will ultimately create her own legacy. The story focuses on Katherine Brandt and takes place in present day New York but cleverly journeys back to 19th century Austria retelling a cryptic story of the past. In 1819 publisher Anton Diabell commissioned fifty composers to write a variation to a waltz he had created. Beethoven rejected his request and dismissed the waltz as nothing but ordinary. He then went on to create thirty-three variations of the waltz. But the mystery remains why? Katherine must decipher the clues left behind in Beethoven’s notebooks to figure out his motives. Beethoven’s music is beautifully intertwined throughout the plot to create a melodically intense story. Academy Award winner Fonda heads up a cast of eight including Samantha Mathis (Grey’s Anatomy), Colin Hanks (Mad Money) and Zach Grenier (A Man for All Seasons). Fonda made here Broadway debut in 1960 where she earned a Tony nod for her performance in There was a Little Girl. She went on to star in three more productions including Invitation to March and Strange Interlude. She has not appeared on the Broadway stage since 1963 but has instead made an impressive film career for herself including her Oscar winning role in Coming Home, On Golden Pond, The China Syndrome and the television film The Dollmaker for which she won an Emmy Award. The production was written and is being directed by Moises Kaufman (I am My Own Wife). Don’t miss your chance to experience this fascinating drama as it is on a limited engagement and is scheduled to close on May 24, 2009. It is certainly a rare opportunity to see this talented and eclectic cast together in a story that will more then pique your interest. This one is definitely for the classical music lover! 33 Variations Tickets Information33 Variations tickets are selling at the box office for between $67 - $117.
