RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THIS FAST-PACED MYSTERY!
This entertaining classic whodunit based on the Alfred Hitchcock film comes to Broadway directly from the West End. The 39 Steps, a Roundabout Theatre Company presentation, begins previews on January 4, 2008 at the American Airlines Theatre with an official start date of January 15, 2008. This production about a man on the run trying to clear his name of a murder he didn’t commit was an instant hit in London and took home the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. This tongue-in-cheek thriller features four actors taking on more than 150 roles. This is a hilariously good time at the theater.
Richard Hannay is taken into a world of intrigue by a mysterious woman who claims to be a spy but when she ends up dead in his flat he must flee London with the police right behind him. This is a spoof on a vintage tale about an innocent man who learns too much about a dangerous spy ring. He is then forced to run all over Scotland while trying to clear his name only to return to London to foil the dastardly villain’s plans. The show is based on John Buchanan’s best selling novel and the 1935 Hitchcock British mystery and contains every scene from the film including the legendary escape from the Fourth Bridge, the first theatrical bi-plane crash and the breathtaking finale in the London Palladium. Hitchcock later remade The 39 Steps during his American career only then it was known as North By Northwest.
The production recently completed its critically acclaimed American debut at Boston’s Huntington Theatre and is ready to take on the Great White Way. The cast features Charles Edwards reprising his acclaimed role as the suave Hanney from the London ensemble. Edwards is best known for his London stage credits which include “Hayfever” at the Haymarket in 2006 and “The Duchess of Malphi” at the Lyttelton, NT in 2003. The other three exceptional cast members include Jennifer Ferrin, Cliff Saunders and Arnie Burton. All four actors play a variety of roles and bring a certain sense of uniqueness to each character they are performing. This is definitely something special to witness.
The 39 Steps is a slapstick comedy that is part espionage thriller, part Hitchcock suspense and part vintage Monty Python all blended together to create a whole new kind of theater experience. This award-winning show is on a strictly limited engagement and is scheduled to close on March 23, 2008. So, don’t miss your chance to see this clever production. Get your tickets today!
