9 To 5 The Musical
Dolly Parton’s musical version of the popular film opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 30, 2009. 9 to 5 is the hilarious musical that deals with the lives of three very different women who come together through their office jobs and their egotistical boss. The production was nominated for four 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score. The production stars award winning actress Allison Janney and stage favorite Stephanie J. Block. The musical is based on the memorable 1980 film of the same name and tells the story of office manager Violet Newstead and her coworkers recently divorced Judy Bernly and the vivacious Doralee Rhodes. These women join forces to turn the tables on their lying, sexist, chauvinistic boss, but when things take a turn for the worse and they are suddenly forced to deal with the consequences the real action begins. These three extremely different women are somehow thrown together and a real bond of friendship develops under the most unlikely of circumstances. The show presents many situations that will cause the audience to roll in the aisles. Much hilarity ensues in this silly show. The production features three very talented actresses in the lead roles. Janney who is probably best known for award winning role as CJ Cregg on the popular television show The West Wing steps into the role of Violet. She was nominated for a 2009 Tony Award for this performance. In the role of Judy is Block who was most recently seen on the Broadway stage in The Pirate Queen and in the role of Elphaba in the popular stage production of Wicked. She gained critical acclaim as Liza Minnelli in her Broadway debut in The Boy From Oz. In the role of Doralee is Megan Hilty. She is best known for her Broadway role as Glinda in Wicked a role she reprised several times for touring productions. In the role of Franklin Hart, Jr. is Tony nominated actor Marc Kudisch. The music and lyrics are by Dolly Parton and the show is being directed Joe Mantello.
