Christopher Walken Takes The Stage…

A Behanding in Spokane made its world premiere at the beginning of March at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Academy Award Winning playwright Martin McDonagh brings this grand black comedy directly to Broadway. This is the Irish writers’ first play set in America instead of his native land and the first to debut on The Great White Way. The production also stars, Zoe Kazan, Anthony Mackie and Sam Rockwell.

Set in a rotten hotel room in an unnamed city, the audience learns that the title act took place before the play begins. At the hotel, the one-handed Carmichael has been searching for his lost hand for more than 40 years, corners a pair of young con-artists with a hand to sell and who are out to make a few hundred bucks. He quickly learns that the nosey hotel clerk with a fondness for lively zoo stories may be their only hope. All kinds of laughs and mishaps occur during the course of this unusual production.

McDonagh, known for his biting, darkly comic style, wrote the plays The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Lonesome West, The Pillowman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore which all played on Broadway and were Tony Award-nominated. He earned an Academy Award for his first venture into film with the short, "Six Shooter," and followed it up with an Academy Award nomination for his feature-length "In Bruges." John Crowley (A Steady Rain and McDonagh's The Pillowman) directs the show.

The show features an eclectic and experienced cast. Legendary actor and Academy Award winner Walken career spans many Broadway musicals and plays and a film resume of over fifty. He has previously appeared on Broadway in The Lion in Winter, The Rose Tattoo and James Joyce's The Dead, for which he received a Tony Award nomination. Some of his notable films include an Oscar-winning performance in The Deer Hunter, an Oscar nomination for Catch Me If You Can and critically acclaimed roles in Annie Hall, Pulp Fiction and Biloxi Blue.

The critics love this one. The plot, the chemistry of the cast and the all around hilarity that ensues makes this a win, win production. Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal said, "The funniest play in New York...Martin McDonagh is one of the finest playwrights in the English speaking world...John Crowley's direction is smart and sharp." Linda Winer from Newsday said, “The matchup of Christopher Walken and Martin McDonagh is perfect.”

Come see for yourself why audiences and critics are raving over A Behanding in Spokane. It’s on a limited run, so get your A Behanding In Spokane tickets soon. The production is scheduled to close on June 6, 2010.
