A COMING OF AGE TALE!
Actor and playwright Chazz Palminteri’s semi-autobiographical one-man show is coming to Broadway for a limited engagement. A Bronx Tale is set to open at the Walter Kerr Theatre in October of 2007. Palminteri plays eighteen roles in the one-man show which runs for ninety minutes with no intermission.
This classic coming of age story is set in 1960’s Bronx and depicts a young boy’s rough childhood and the unforgettable people he encounters along the way. Cologio also known as “C” loves and admires his honest and hard working father Lorenzo, but when he develops a friendship with the dangerous local crime boss Sonny he begins to think that there are other ways of getting what you want. He finds himself caught between the two different lifestyles and father figures; that of his devoted father and the other of a mobster who has so much and is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants no matter the cost. The play is set during an unstable time in a neighborhood on the brink of social change. “C” is forced to make choices about his life that will change him forever.
The lone actor in this production Academy Award nominee Palminteri has performed this show in both Los Angeles and New York but this run marks his Broadway debut. He is best known for his lengthy resume of film work including roles in The Usual Suspects, Mulholland Falls and Analyze This. He also voiced a character in the popular children’s movie Stuart Little. The production premiered off-Broadway in 1989. Palminteri later adapted the screenplay for the film version in 1992 which was directed by Robert DeNiro. The two starred in the film with Palminteri in the role of Sonny and DeNiro playing against type in the role of the non-mobster Lorenzo. The film marked DeNiro’s directorial debut. The current production is being directed by Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks. He has directed many Broadway hits including Guys and Dolls, Six Degrees of Separation and Lend Me a Tenor all of which earned him a Tony Award for Best Direction. In addition to Broadway he has directed several television episodes including Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond and Two and a Half Men.
A Bronx Tale is truly something to experience. It is a classic story of a boy who is faced with tough decisions about his future. The underlying themes throughout the show are love, family, friendship and social change. When all the choices are made and the show comes to a resolution “C” is no longer a child. His father has done all he can for him and can now only hope that it was enough. The production is on an eighteen week run and is set to close in February of 2008. Don’t miss your chance to see this amazing tale come to life by a very talented and brilliant actor.
