All the love, pain, laughter and regret that make up the wonderful unit called family are creatively depicted in the new musical-A Catered Affair on Broadway. The life of a lower-income Bronx family in the mid 1900s is humorously portrayed in this musical which deals with relationships which are strained to the hilt when a couple is faced with a critical decision- whether to spend their savings on a extravagant catered affair for their only daughter’s wedding or to start a family business. A Must Watch Musical
A Catered Affair on Broadway starring Harvey Fierstein, a four-time Tony Award winner, Tony nominee Tom Wopat and Faith Prince, another Tony Award winner, is the refreshingly funny musical of the season and the wedding of the year.
A Catered Affair on Broadway is set in 1953 in the Bronx. A musical with duration of 90 minutes with no intermission, this play is written by Harvey Fierstein and songwriter John Bucchino and is masterfully directed by Tony Award winner John Doyle. The play explores all the touching, funny and difficult stuff that all of us undergo as part of the institution called family. Who did what, who said what and to whom, things which are left unsaid, the love and laughter and sadness which can only be shared within a family, all these are issues which are dealt with in A Catered Affair on Broadway.
The story revolves around Agnes Hurley who is adamant that her daughter have a complete white wedding with all the works, flowers, a cake and a ten foot bridal train which she herself never had. The question whether anyone else including the bride herself wants it or not seems immaterial. Tom Hurley who has worked his entire life as a New York City taxicab driver has finally enough money to buy his own cab. But he has to now decide whether his daughter’s happiness or a taxi is the better investment. Janey, the bride-to-be who was raised in the shadow of an older brother now uncomfortably finds herself in the spotlight of the family after the passing away of her brother in Korea. Winston is the bachelor uncle who lives with his sister and manages to interfere in everything around him, all the while avoiding his own entanglements.
A Catered Affair, which is based on the 1956 Warner Bros classic written by Gore Vidal thus follows the hilarious and endearingly human story of the Hurley family struggling to make a decision between a lavish wedding party for their only daughter and a wise investment.Getting Tickets For A Catered Affair On Broadway
