A Free Man of Color tickets is on sale for the World premier on Broadway this fall. Tony Award-winning playwright John Guare unites with Tony Award-winning director George C. Wolfe to bring this epic story which spans the globe alive on the big stage. The production brings together a greatly talented cast which includes Tony Award winner Jeffrey Wright starring as Jacques Cornet, an 1801 Don Juan. The show also features John McMartin (Follies, Grey Gardens, Show Boat), Veanne Cox ( La Cage aux Folles; Caroline, or Change) and Reg Rogers (The Royal Family). A Free Man Of Color tickets is available for the Lincoln Center Theater production playing at the Vivian Beaumont Theater through January 9, 2011.

The Story

A Free Man Of Color is mainly staged in New Orleans during the 19th century. The story revolves around the Haitian slave revolts when its large population of Free People of Color or "Gens de Couleur Libres." During the period of history the city was populated more by European culture rather than American ideals. The epic tale puts the main character Jacques Cornet, the wealthiest man within the sexually charged and racially progressive city, into crucial turns of events in the year 1801. While Cornet feels everything is flawless within his city of Utopia, history quickly unveils a chain of events, which unleashes worldwide effects.

The expansive production moves its setting across the globe from New Orleans, to Haiti and even into Napoleon's court. The Lincoln Center's vast Beaumont stage easily handles the high production values such as flying trips to France, Spain, and the West Indies. John Guare's writing is spectacular as it unravels the fortunes of a wealthy free man of color in New Orleans during that revolutionary era. Alongside George C. Wolfe's direction the audience is treated to lavish sets, jaw dropping stage effects and rich historical panorama of a young nation emerging from its 18th-century birth and groping for political purchase in recent times. While some of the humorous elements within the writing detract from the play it still manages to bring the viewer through deciding moments in history through an impious modern slant.

A Free Man Of Color tickets marks the return of Guare to the Lincoln Center Theater. Guare's other popular plays The House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation, Four Baboons Adoring The Sun and Chaucer in Rome all enjoyed their premiers at the "LCT." Other works include Landscape of the Body and the book to the popular "Sweet Smell of Success." He earned Tony Awards for the book and lyrics to the 1971 musical Two Gentlemen of Verona. A Free Man Of Color will be George C. Wolfe's directorial debut at the LCT. The play features wonderful set design by David Rockwell, costume design by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting design by Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer, sound design by Scott Stauffer, original music by Jeanine Tesori and choreography by Hope Clarke. A Free Man Of Color tickets is now on sale at the box office for this epic historical play.
