Mamet Production Headed to Broadway…

A Life in the Theatre, starring Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight, opens on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on October 12, 2010. The production has been in previews since September. This will mark the Broadway premier of David Mamet’s 1977 two actor play which tells the tale of an up-and-coming actor and an almost over-the-hill one as they engage in a power struggle that is camouflaged by their onstage and backstage relationship. This play is a bit different than what we’re used to seeing on the Broadway stage. It’s a story of two me’ a seasoned actor and a younger, new actor. The story of the older actor telling the younger actor the tricks of the trade is told through a series of short, comical vignettes. In an unexpected turn of events, the veteran may learn something from the newbie.

This show truly gives us a behind-the-scenes look at life in the theatre as both actors struggle to share both a dressing room and the spotlight. A Life in the Theatre follows two actors in a repertory company: Robert, an older, experienced performer and John, a newcomer to the stage. John at first welcomes Robert’s guidance, but soon overshadows his mentor. The audience experiences rehearsals to performances, ego trips to acting advice, while getting a glimpse into the complex relationship that develops as one generation steps aside for the next. It’s a story of life’s natural progression that demonstrates every emotion from love and respect to impatience and resentment.

The two-man production stars film and television star Stewart who is best known for his roles in Star Trek; The Next Generation and the X-Men movies, and Knight who was Emmy nominated for his role in the popular Grey’s Anatomy. Not only do the two have extensive Broadway experience, but have both performed on the London stage as well. The production was written by Mamet and is being directed by his long term collaborator Neil Pepe. Inspired by Mamet’s early backstage experiences and his own brief career as an actor, this bittersweet comedy delivers all the absurdity and hardship associated with a life in the theatre. It throws off such a realistic vibe.

The production is on a fifteen week limited engagement and is scheduled to close on January 2, 2011. Don’t miss your opportunity to experience these two very talented actors portraying everything from soldiers to surgeons in an amusingly funny comedy. This is sure to be a fun and intriguing theatre experience.
