Sondheim Musical Now Playing!

This past November Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury opened the Walter Kerr Theatre in the Sondheim and Weeler's revival of A Little Night Music. The production is currently running on an open-ended schedule. Sondheim's 1973 musical is based on the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night. This is the first time the musical is being revived for the Broadway stage.

This witty story centers on eloquent, aging actress, Desiree Armfeldt. She finds herself renewing a romance with a married lawyer when she grows tired of her blustering soldier lover, and the lawyer grows impatient with his virginal child-bride. Romantic subplots collide during one eventful weekend in the country. Set at the turn of the century, the production sets the stage for a tangled web of deception, desire and intrigue among Sweden's upper class. The book was written by Hugh Wheeler with music and lyrics by Sondheim. The score includes "Send in the Clowns," "Liaisons," "The Miller's Son," "Every Day a Little Death" and "A Weekend in the Country.”

The star-powered women in this show are making quite the splash on the Great White Way. In the role of Desiree is well known film star Zeta-Jones in her Broadway debut. The award-winning actress seems to be making a huge impression on the critics. Frank Scheck from the Hollywood Reporter had this to say about the actress’s performance: “Zeta-Jones is captivating as Desiree. The actress has musical theater experience, and it shows; she has terrific stage presence, unlike so many movie stars who tread the boards, and she sings and moves beautifully.” Zeta-Jones is best known for her roles in Chicago (for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress), Oceans Twelve and Zorro. Playing her mother in this production is famed stage and television and five time Tony Award winning actress Lansbury who was most recently seen in last season’s hit Blithe Spirit. Michael Kuchwara from the Associated Press said this about her performance: ‘‘The luminous [Angela] Lansbury is a wonder. The 84-year-old actress does something extraordinary, too: her Madame Armfeldt progressively gets more frail as the evening progresses...the aging process has never been more eloquently put on display.’’

The critics are in love with A Little Night Music and audiences are raving about the show. The two leading ladies alone are worth the price of admission. Don't miss your chance to experience this witty, romantic musical. It's a real treat for the Broadway musical lover. A Little Night Music Broadway tickets are on sale now for this refreshing musical.

Worth mentioning- Catherine Zeta-Jones will not be performing the role of Desiree from Tuesday, February 16, to Sunday, February 21, 2010, and Tuesday, March 30, 2010, to Sunday, April 4, 2010
