Broadway Play (Drama)

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

Screen and stage star Jackman returns to Broadway in this gripping new American play. A Steady Rain centers in on the lives of two Chicago lifelong friends and policemen, and tells the story of their differing accounts of a few harrowing days that changed their lives forever. The show is now playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and also stars the very talented Daniel Craig who is probably best known for playing the most recent James Bond.

Denny and Joey are not only lifelong friends, but partners in the Chicago police force as well. Denny's content with his perfect home life, complete with wife and kids, while Joey lives alone, drinks too much and seems to remain single throughout the years. Throughout the course of the play, the two friends tell their differing accounts about a dangerous evening on the unsavory streets of the city that puts them in the direct path of a serial killer and pushes their loyalties to the limit. The play doesn’t consist of much in the way of scenery. It’s basically the two actors, sitting on the stage in wooden chairs under interrogation lights, creating some serious metaphor. The lack of ascetics is hardly noticeable because the script is extremely gripping and the dialogue and chemistry between the two actors seem to pull you in from the very beginning.

The production has only been on Broadway a few weeks, but has already gained much attention and attraction. The two stars are a huge draw, but the story and the script seem to be leaving audiences intrigued and talking. The production was written by Keith Huff and is being directed by Tony Award nominee John Crowley. While the production is new to New York, it was first produced in 2006 at New York Stage and Film's Powerhouse Theater. It had its world premiere in 2007 at Chicago Dramatists and was remounted in February 2008 at Chicago's Royal George Theatre winning Jefferson Awards for Best New Work and Best Production. Jackman who stars in the role of Denny is probably best known for his Tony Award winning role in the Broadway production of The Boy from Oz. He has also starred in such films as X-Men, Kate & Leopold and The Prestige. He has hosted the Tony Awards three times as well as playing host to this past years Academy Awards. In the role of Joey is Craig. He became a household name when he was cast as the sixth actor to play James Bond. He portrayed the secret agent in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. His other films include The Golden Compass and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. This production marks his Broadway debut.

A Steady Rain is a must see production that digs deep into the police/crime genre. The talented team of Jackman and Craig should not be missed, but get your A Steady Rain tickets soon because the production is on a twelve week limited engagement and is scheduled to close on December 6, 2009. The show runs ninety minutes with no intermission, so as not to break the flow of the drama.
