A View From A Bridge Tickets
Miller's Tragedy Comes to BroadwayHollywood stars Liev Schreiber and Scarlett Johansson began performance for Arthur Miller's tragic play A View from the Bridge in January at the Cort Theatre. One of Miller's most famous drama's, the production hasn't been seen on Broadway in over a decade. He attempts a Greek tragedy with an American flair. Throw in a hot cast and you get theater perfection. The production is set in the mid-1950s, near the Brooklyn waterfront and focuses on Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman who lives with his wife, Beatrice, and her orphaned niece, 17-year-old Catherine. Eddie is quite fond of Catherine, and his obsession becomes more pronounced after Beatrice’s nephews, Marco and Rodolpho, arrive from Italy and move in with the Carbones. The threat of exportation for being illegal immigrants weighs on the two newcomers, and a jealous Eddie becomes fixated on his belief that Rodolpho is courting Catherine only because marrying her would result in a green card. Eddie's jealousy brings about tragic confrontations and dire consequences. Tony Award winner Schreiber shines in the role of blue collar worker Eddie. He was most recently seen on Broadway in the 2007 production of Talk Radio. In 2005, he won a Tony Award for his performance in Glengarry Glen Ross. He will also be appearing in the 2010 horror film Scream 4, he is one of five actors who have appeared in all four movies. This production marks Johansson's much awaited Broadway debut. The 25 year old actress already has such films as Iron Man 2, Lost in Translation and Match Point under her belt. The show also stars Jessica Hecht, Michael Christofer and Morgan Spector. The production is being directed by Gregory Mosher. A View from the Bridge is one of this seasons biggest successes. Critics are raving. Ben Brantley of the New York Times said, “Extraordinary...beautifully observed. [Liev] Schreiber registers changes in emotional temperature with organic physical precision. [Scarlett] Johansson melts into her character so thoroughly that her nimbus of celebrity disappears.” David Rooney from Variety said, “First-rate... [director Gregory] Mosher has instilled in his outstanding cast an unconditional trust in Arthur Miller's text, evoking a time, a place and a 1950s blue-collar community with penetrating integrity. Each scene flows seamlessly from the one before in a production that expertly plants the seeds of inexorable tragedy yet grips with a tension and volatility that make every moment seem unpredictable.” This mesmerizing, fast-paced production is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on April 4, 2010.
