The Roundabout Theatre Company’s one-act play After Miss Julie opened at the American Airlines Theatre on September 16 and will run till December 6, 2009. The original play by August Strindberg was set in the 19th century Sweden. The adaptation by Patrick Marber and directed by Mark Brokaw is set in post World War II Britain in the summer of 1945. The drama has Sienna Miller playing Miss Julie with Johnny Lee Miller as John, the chauffer, and Marin Ireland as Christine, the household cook. After Miss Julie tickets are running around $100.00 on average.
Miss Julie is the daughter of an aristocrat, who fraternizes with the working class and stoops quite low to flirt with the chauffer. Sienna Miller has portrayed the character of Miss Julie, which is full of complexities and contradictions, with much conviction.
Though the class system may not go down well in contemporary thinking, but After Miss Julie has been produced and directed expertly to pass muster in today’s liberated society. Sienna Miller plays the role of a daughter of an emancipated mother who mixes up with the lower classes and a father who hates the lower classes, and of a girl rejected by an officer, to utmost justification. The Theatre
After Miss Julie is performing at the American Airlines Theatre, which was once known as the Selwyn Theatre. Built by the Selwyn Brothers - Edgar and Arch Selwyn in 1918, this theater was designed by architect George Keister in an early Italian Renaissance style. It opened on October 2, 1918.
The Selwyn Theatre fell to disrepair and in 1997 was offered to the Roundabout Theatre Company which completely renovated and restored it. Roundabout thoroughly transformed it and returned it to its former splendor, with the theater boxes, the murals, and the original ornamental plasterwork back in place. It now has excellent acoustics and clear sightlines.
The Selwyn Theatre lost its original façade due to the accidental collapse of the entire front of the building. It was reconditioned with a modern exterior and the new theatre’s auditorium with a classic Italian Renaissance style interior.
The new theatre reopened in July 2000 and was renamed the American Airlines Theatre due to a large donation by the American Airlines.
