The Roundabout Theatre Company presents a reworking of August Strindberg’s classic 1888 drama about sex, class and status. After Miss Julie opens for previews at the American Airlines Theatre on September 18, 2009 with and official start date of October 22, 2009. The production stars film actress Sienna Miller in the title role. This new interpretation of the classic play is a radical reworking that relocates the original story to an English country house on the eve of the British Labour Party’s historic landslide election victory in 1945. The play centers on the young and rich Miss Julie and her status obsessed servant. Once they engage in a forbidden flirtation it quickly develops into a life or death situation. A night of torrid passion proves to have dire consequences. The three main characters are Julie, John and Christine. Most of the action takes place in the kitchen of a large country house. The play was written by Patrick Marber and is being directed by Mark Brokaw. When it opens in September it will mark the productions American premier having previously played in London in November of 2003. The cast features three main characters and is lead by Miller. Her film credits include High Speed, The Ride, The Edge of Life and Factory Girl. Tony nominee Marin Ireland who recently starred in the Broadway production of Reasons to be Pretty is also featured in the cast along with Jonny Lee Miller. He starred in the ABC series Eli Stone and in such films as Hackers, Trainspotting and Behind the Lines. This talented threesome brings much depth and drama to these characters and you can’t help but feel the chemistry. This new version digs deeper than the original work and outs a different spin on the outcome. The production is harsh an deals with the social climate of the time for which it is set.
