In 1965, William Schuman, President of Lincoln Center, and a distinguished American composer in his own right, conceived of a recital hall that would house ‘the finest chamber music’ organization. He planned this hall to equal the finest ballet, symphonic and opera companies at Lincoln Center. The eminent pianist and chamber musician, Charles Wadsworth, was invited to help determine the structure of the new chamber music hall. The third member of this triumvirate was Alice Tully. A former opera singer and vocal recitalist, and an heiress to a large family fortune, Alice Tully agreed to help finance a chamber music hall provided it had exemplary acoustics and comfort.
The venue opened its doors with an inaugural concert by The Chamber Music Society on Sep 11, 1969. Alice Tully served as the Chairman of the Board of The Chamber Music Society from 1969 to 1989. Today, concert hall at Lincoln Center is one of the most famous performing venues in New York City. It is a top-rate venue for classical recitals as well as for concert jazz performances. The Renovation
Though it had been hosting about 1,300 events every year, the Hall had not been renovated since it opened in 1969. There was a need to update its outdated public amenities and inadequate performer support. A major internal and external aesthetical transformation - along with the state-of-the-art upgradation not only for concerts, but also for film, theater, and dance - was planned.
The renovation featured the following, among many others:
A three-story, all-glass outer lobby and open public plaza. The lobby with a larger box office, a prominently located bar and concession space.
The old southern wall of the lobby replaced by a glass curtain wall.
A new stage lighting system to expand performance capabilities.
An automated stage extension and custom theater seats.
A new automated screen for screening films.
The concert hall was temporarily closed for renovations to the lobby and the box office, in July and August 2006, and opened for The Chamber Music Society’s Opening Night concert in Sep, 2006.Tickets For Alice Tully Hall Events
