The theater is located in the heart of Harlem, between Adam Clayton Powell Blvd (7th Ave) and Frederick Douglass Blvd (8th Ave). Billed as the place “where stars are born and legends are made,” The concert venue has been responsible for the emergence and popularity of musical genres, such as jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul and hip-hop. Apollo Theater is not just an American landmark, but also a symbol of American artistic achievement. Its Amateur Night, introduced in1934, has been where the careers of emerging and established black and Latino performers were forged. This is where the careers of artists, such as Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Michael Jackson, D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, among others, were launched.
This Theater not only obtained the status of city landmark, but also that of federal and state landmark, in 1983. In 1985, the theater celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1987, two years later, a television show, based on the original Amateur Night – ShowTime at the Apollo – began airing. This show now runs weekly on NBC affiliates in over 150 markets nationally.
New York State acquired the Apollo Theater in 1991, and established a non-profit organization – the Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc., with the support of the private sector, in addition to the state and local governments. The Foundation focused on bolstering the Theater’s legend and brought stability to its operations. The theater, today, is Harlem’s top tourist attraction, and draws 1.3 million visitors each year.
The venue has made a dramatic revival over the last few years with the Foundation’s vision to make it a leading performing arts venue and a community-centered institution. It opened a Broadway type musical, a George C. Wolfe directed, Harlem Song. It also hosted major shows by top artists, such as Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Vanessa Williams, and Salma Hayek, in addition to Wynton Marsalis, Rosie Perez, The Strokes and David Byrne among others.
Apollo Theater’s renovation has resulted in upgrading of the theatrical production values. It has installed state-of-the-art lighting and audio systems.
The theater has also organized community outreach programs, such as concerts featuring the best of Harlem, as well as Free Films for Kids program. In 2001, multiple genres of Latin musical styles debuted at the Apollo at the Latin Nites – a showcase program. Whoopi Goldberg’s one-woman show and Bill Cosby’s “A Great Night in Harlem” have all contributed to cultural renaissance in Harlem.
Apollo Theater, as an institution, has had the greatest impact on the entertainment industry, and the world culture. The great entertainers of the music world, inspirers in their own right, such as Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and the modern bands, such as Korn and The Strokes, among others, have all been inspired by those legends who emerged from the hallowed stage of the Apollo Theater.
All these kings of music have been honored to be a part of the Apollo’s legendary performances, and to be associated with Apollo’s innovation and creativity.
Apollo Theater has set the standard of excellence, a notch higher.
