August Osage County
CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED FAMILY SAGA! This new play written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Tracy Letts was scheduled to opened in December of 2007 at the Imperial Theatre but has since moved to the Music Box Theatre. August: Osage County is a comic drama that focuses on a very dysfunctional family that is facing a critical turning point when certain circumstances force secrets to the forefront. The production is quite lengthy for Broadway standards as it runs a full three hours and twenty minutes with two intermissions. The actual setting for the production is that of a doll house where the characters are often seen cleaning, watching television or playing cards. This thrilling play follows the Weston’s, a dysfunctional Midwestern American family. This large extended clan comes together at their rural Oklahoma homestead when their alcoholic patriarch disappears. Not only are they dealing with this mysterious disappearance but with Violet, their pill popping, unstable mother, as well. The story spotlights the family’s many secrets and repressed truths that they are forced to bring out into the open. The play features witty, comical dialogue with emotional revelations and characters that the audience will have a hard time forgetting. August: Osage County came to Broadway directly from its sold-out premiere at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago where it was a success with audiences and critics alike. The Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a Tony award winning Theatre Company founded in 1976 committed to cast collaboration and is currently the longest running American theatre ensemble. The company has helped launch the careers of several of today’s prominent actors including Gary Sinise, John Malkovich, John Mahoney and Laurie Metcalf. And as with many of the Steppenwolf productions the audience is usually not disappointed. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008. Come and see why the critics are raving about this highly anticipated family drama. Variety magazine said “Deep and highly entertaining work, consistently rich, raw and intense, filled with viciousness and vicious wit.” This spectacular production will leave the audience in awe of the powerful plot, talented cast and astonishing revelations.
