After hitting it big Off Broadway, now puppets are telling us how to deal with modern life on Broadway! But then, this is a musical that opened to rave reviews and was extended four times! Adults have loved this original play, and so do the mature teenagers. It touches the real life issues, such as sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. Avenue Q opened at the Vineyard Theater – an Off-Broadway theater in March 2003 to rave reviews, and was nominated for the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical Award.
The production moved to Broadway at the Shubert Group owned John Golden Theater, previewed on July 10, 2003, and after 22 previews, opened on July 31, 2003. This, most audacious of all musicals on Broadway, has performed 1,380 times as of November 19, 2006 – and still going strong. In 2003, the Broadway production was nominated for six Tony Awards and won three for: Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Jeff Whitty), and Best Original Score (Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx).
This Jason Moore directed and Ken Roberson choreographed musical is based in an imaginary neighborhood where the residents struggle to make sense of a series of problems life has dished out - adult-size issues, such as repressed sexuality, unemployment, racism and depression. The show manages to exploit such trivial aspects of day-to-day life, humorously and touchingly.
The Story ProfileThe Broadway production is the story about a bright-eyed college graduate – Princeton. With big dreams and a very small bank account, he finds that Avenue Q is the only neighborhood in New York he can afford. It is a story about Brian – an out-of-work comedian, and his fiancée – Christmas Eve, a therapist. It is the story of a good-hearted slacker – Nicky, and his investment banker roommate – Rod. It is the story of the Internet addict – Trekkie Monster, and it is the story of Kate – a kindergarten assistant. Avenue Q is the story of Princeton and his friends, and of their struggle to find jobs, etc, and their purpose in life. And, do you remember Gary Coleman? Who does not! He is the building’s superintendent.
A Word Of CautionThis Broadway play is full of adult oriented content. It contains full puppet nudity, including simulated sex between puppets. The show may not be appropriate for children aged 16 and below. The mature language and situations make Avenue Q a musical for adults.
