Billy Elliot The Musical
LONDON MUSICAL PLANS TO TAKE BROADWAY BY STORM! This heartwarming musical comes to Broadway direct from London where it was nominated for nine Olivier Awards and won four including Best New Musical. Billy Elliot comes to the Imperial Theatre for previews on October 1, 2008 and is scheduled for an official start date of November 13, 2008. This new show which features a score by sensational singer and songwriter Elton John is based on the popular award winning 2000 film of the same name. Set in County Durham against the backdrop of the UK coal miners strike in the mid-eighties this inspirational show tells the tale of a boy who finds he has a natural talent for ballet while all the other boys around him have a common interest in boxing. Billy must come to terms with his desire to be a dancer while his father must deal with the fact that his son will never be a champion boxer. In addition to reuniting the film’s creative team the production features a score by Elton John who is no stranger to the musical genre (The Lion King and Aida). The group has already proven that they work well together considering the success of the award winning West End production. The New York run will include Tony award winner and Broadway veteran Carole Shelley in the role of Grandmom. She originated the role of Madame Morrible in the 2003 production of Wicked and won a Tony award in 1979 for her work in The Elephant Man. Her Broadway career spans 4 decades including roles in The Odd Couple, Noises Off, Stepping Out and Show Boat. In the role of Dad is Gregory Jbara who made his Broadway debut in the 1988 production of Serious Money. He has been going strong ever since with roles in shows like Damn Yankees, Chicago and most recently in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The role of Billy will be alternated by David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish. Billy Elliot is a feel good musical! At times it tends to get a bit dark with some of the material but the ending is never the less uplifting. It is a story of a boy who never quits and has the courage to follow his heart despite the many obstacles in his way. Come see what has the West End buzzing.
