Blithe Spirit was first seen on the West End in London in 1941. Back then it had set the longest running record for 1, 997 recitals. The debut took place at the Morosco Theater. John C Wilson was the director and Stewart Chaney was the designer of the debut. The same play was then shifted to the Booth Theater in 1942, where it ran 657 performances.
Blithe Spirit Broadway was revived yet again in 1987 by Neil Simon and it ran 104 performances, this time. Brian Murray was the director and the stars were Richard Chamberlain as Charles, Blythe Danner as Elvira, Judith Ivey as Ruth and Geraldine Page as Madama Arcati Blythe. Blithe Spirit is the story of a happily married man, Charles. His marriage to Ruth is his second marriage. His first wife, Elvira has been dead for the past seven years.
Charles, a novelist by profession wants a clinching plot for his new novel. For this he hires Madame Arcati to have a séance in his house. What follows is a hilarious comedy of errors wherein the ghost of Elvira arrives as a result of the séance. The ghost wishes to break the second marriage Charles and so begins to chase and torment Ruth. The ghost plans a car accident to kill Charles so that he goes to heaven where she can meet him; however Ruth dies in that car accident.
Now Ruth’s ghost arrives on stage to take revenge of her death. Charles who is fed up with the two ghosts and their continuous uproar in the house decides to get rid of them. He again summons Madame Arcati to hold another séance. The story ends with the séance proving fruitful. However, Madame Arcati advises Charles to change his home. So Charles leaves his home and the two ghosts continue to battle!Blithe Spirit - Tickets
