The title of this comic play is inspired from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem “To a Skylark” that proclaims, “Hail to thee, blithe spirit! Bird thou never wert”. The plot of the play revolves around a socialite and novelist Charles Condomine who is haunted by his first wife’s ghost. This play also includes a séance held by the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati.
The male protagonist of this play, author Charles Condomine hires the eccentric medium Arcati in order to find material for his new book. For this purpose, she summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira. The ghost of Elvira seeks out to take revenge on her former husband and makes repeated attempts to break up his marriage with his second wife, Ruth. Though, the play contains elements like ghost, medium, séance etc., it is a comic play and the comedy arises from the continuous tug-of-war between his current wife and the dead one.
