Broadway Play (Comedy)

History :: Now Playing :: Schedule :: Reviews

This clever revival comes to the Sam S. Shubert Theatre for previews on February 26, 2009 with an official start date of March 15, 2009. The award winning cast features four-time Tony award winner Angela Lansbury, two-time Tony award winner Christine Ebersole and film star Rupert Everett. Blithe Spirit spins a pretty witty tale about a successful novelist who wishes to learn more about the occult for a new book he is writing but during his research process he gets so much more than he bargained for.

Successful author Charles Condomine hires medium Madame Arkati to come to his home and perform a séance during a party in the hope that he can get material for his new book. Unfortunately for him she ends up summoning the ghost of his glamorous first wife Elvira who is out to seek revenge on Charles. She attempts and succeeds to disrupt his second marriage and wreak havoc on his life. Charles desperately seeks to rid himself of this inconvenient problem. But will he succeed before Elvira gets the best of him?

The play was written by Noel Coward and has been hailed as one of his most triumphant works. The play first debuted in the West End in 1941 and did well later that year on Broadway. The play was also made into a film version in 1945 starring Rex Harrison. The current production stars award winning actress and stage legend Angela Lansbury in the role of Madame Arkati. Lansbury is probably best known for her role as Jessica Fletcher in the hit television series Murder, She Wrote from 1984 to 1996. She has taken home Tony awards for her roles in Mame, Dear World, Gypsy and Sweeny Todd. In the role of Elvira is Christine Ebersole who won a Tony award in 2001 for her comeback performance in 42nd Street and again in 2007 for her performance in Grey Gardens. She has also turned out impressive performances in Oklahoma, Camelot and Steel Magnolias. In the role of the tortured Charles is Rupert Everett who is best known for his work in such films as My Best Friend’s Wedding and An Ideal Husband.

Blithe Spirit is an interesting tale that turns a series of unfortunate events into a comical journey. The talented cast only enhances this amusing farce. The show is currently an open-ended run and Blithe Spirit tickets are on sale now. Don’t miss your opportunity to catch this funny show with an amazing cast.
