Breakout Hit Finds its Way to Broadway

Roundabout Theatre Company presents London’s Kneehigh Theatre’s highly acclaimed production of Brief Encounter. The musical is scheduled for previews at Studio 54 on September 10, 2010 with an official opening on September 28, 2010. Inspired by playwright Noel Peirce Coward’s one-act called Still Life, the story is better known as the 1945 David Lean movie, "Brief Encounter," which had a screenplay by Coward.

The show is set during post-war England and the lives and loves of three couples are played out in a station tearoom using the words and songs of Coward to create a breathtaking, charmingly amusing and touching show. The story follows the brief affair between Laura (a housewife and mother) and Alec (a married doctor), who meet at a railway station café when Alec removes a piece of grit from Laura's eye. Many of the songs are performed right in the aisles of the theater. According to Roundabout, Brief Encounter "is an imaginative new work that combines elements of Noël Coward's beloved screenplay, and the one-act play [Still Life] on which it was based, with song, dance and Technicolor displays of emotion." Supporting players perform songs and complete the tearoom/train station community. Characters also blend into film projections, making the work unlike anything Coward could have imagined.

Most of the cast is reviving their roles from the London production, but it also includes some American performers as well. After a celebrated London run, Brief Encounter made its U.S. debut in an extended engagement at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre in the fall 2009. The St. Ann's engagement in Brooklyn opened Dec. 6 and was extended through Jan. 17, 2010. Its American tour ended at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis in April 2010. Now, it’s finally ready to grace the NYC stage and take on the devoted Broadway fans.

While the show emits an old-fashioned vibe, it is extremely inventive and unlike anything else currently on Broadway. Cast members wander the house, greeting theatergoers and performing songs before the action begins; the fourth wall is often broken while characters walk in and out of projected film sequences, and the main lovers of the tale begin the evening by sitting in the front row of theatre, watching a movie. This show truly brings the audience into the production. According to earlier production notes, "Switching seamlessly between live theatre and remade film footage, Brief Encounter takes audiences back to a bygone age of romance and the silver screen.

The production is on a limited run and is scheduled to close on December 5, 2010. Tickets are on sale now. Come see what critics are raving about. Ben Brantely of the New York Times said, “Captivating & ingenious. I felt enlivened, enlightened and seriously moved.”
