Brighton Beach Memoirs Tickets
Coming-of-age Comedy! This production is based on Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical look into his life as a teenager growing up in Depression era Brooklyn. Brighton Beach Memoirs is currently in previews and is scheduled to open at the Nederlander Theatre on October 25, 2009. This story is the first installment in the Eugene Trilogy; it precedes Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound. The production tells the tale of Eugene, a Polish/Jewish teenager who describes what it’s like to experience puberty, sexual awakening and struggling with an identity search while growing up in his crowded household. The play takes place in 1937 New York in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn. Eugene and his extended family live in a crowded home where privacy is at a minimum. He often daydreams about a baseball career, but he must deal with family problems, the opposite sex and his budding desire to become a writer. His day is constantly consumed with fantasies of a better life and they tend to become a way for him to cope with the realities of real life. The play originally debuted on Broadway in 1983 and starred a young and relatively unknown Matthew Broderick. The production did quite well and went on to be nominated for four Tony Awards that season, winning Broderick one for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play. The play also won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. There was also a 1986 film adaptation starring Jonathon Silverman and Blythe Danner. Some of Simon’s other well known plays include The Odd Couple (1965), Lost in Yonkers (1991) and The Dinner Party (2000). The current production features Noah Robbins in the role of Eugene and stage and TV veteran and Emmy Award winning actress Laurie Metcalf who is probably best known for playing Jackie on the popular, long running sitcom Roseanne. She was recently seen on Broadway opposite Nathan Lane in David Mamet’s November. This creative and witty production has a memorable story that so many can relate to. It’s a tale about a boy who dreams big in an attempt to make a better life for himself. This show will be running in repertory with the third installment in this series; Broadway Bound. It will feature the same cast as Brighton Beach Memoirs including Robbins, Metcalf, Dennis Boutsikaris and Jessica Hecht and are both being directed by David Cromer (Our Town).
