Bring It On Broadway is a new Broadway musical opening for summer 2012. Producers feel confident, they can gain an audience over the summer for this film based musical comedy, which explores competitive cheerleading. The production is based on the 2000 film which starred Kirsten Dunst and became a cult classic to many. The show began on a thirteen city tour before landing a home at the St. James Theatre. A rare way to get to Broadway as most productions go on tour once Broadway sales slow. The Bring It On Broadway musical is scheduled for a limited engagement closing on October 7. For any fans of the film or those looking for a humorous new show with great music and dance then "Bring It On" is certainly worth a look.

The Film

The somewhat well-liked 2000 film was directed by Peyton Reed and written by Jessica Bendinger. The movie sits in the popular genre of teen comedy and explores the universe of competitive cheerleading. The story centers around Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) and her new job as captain of the squad. The squad learns that the routine they have been working on is stolen and Torrance must work to save face creating an original routine for her squad that can bring a sixth national title. The film would go on to produce four sequels; all went direct to video without the first cast or creative behind them. The Broadway production follows the plot and story of the film, adding new music and well crafted dance routines.

Stage Production

The first production was staged at the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia on January 16, 2011. The production has music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Tom Kitt, lyrics by Amanda Green, and a book by Jeff Whitty. The premiere enjoyed solid reviews and was well received by local critics and audiences. The production included award-winning competitive cheerleaders from across the country which gave the show much credibility. The stage show then picked up a national tour, hitting most major U.S. cities, including L.A., San Francisco, Denver, Houston, and Toronto. The Broadway debut will officially open on August 1, 2012 at the St. James Theatre. Previews begins on July 12 for the limited run which will see a final curtain on October 7, 2012.

Bring It On Broadway is directed by Andy Blankenbuehler featuring a cast of Adrienne Warren, Ryann Redmond, Taylor Louderman, Jason Gotay, Elle McLemore, Ariana DeBose, Gregory Haney, Neil Haskell, Janet Krupin, Kate Rockwell, Nick Womack. The Broadway production will hope to receive some of the positive attention which the original Atlanta staging found. The first production was heavily praised for it's witty and funny writing, fresh hip-hop score and innovative use of the actors, dancers and cheerleaders. Bring It On Broadway is certainly a show to keep an eye on this summer. Just make sure to give it a chance before it's too late!
