Out of all Broadway musicals South Pacific features a storyline that makes you sit up and think. It has songs that move your heart. Why South Pacific Is A Popular Broadway Musical

“South Pacific” has made history. This love story has everything – the ruthlessness of war, the effects of prejudice, racism, and love. It wasn’t easy for the creative team to touch upon taboo topics of racism in this musical. They were pressurized by the “moral police.” However, “South Pacific” managed to emerge from the criticism and went on to become one of the biggest musical hits on Broadway!

Although, James A. Michener, who has written “Tales of the South Pacific”, had requested Hammerstein and Rodgers, the creators of this musical, to cut the thought provoking song named “You’ve got to be carefully taught.” The noteworthy feature of this musical is its straightforward expression of thoughts.

It was 60 years ago that this show was first opened to the audience at the Majestic Theater in the year 1949. Now, in 2008, this musical is here again to stir your emotions at the Vivian Beamont Theater. If you want to see the uninhibited creativity of talented people like Richard Rodgers (music composer), James A. Michener (author of the original book), and Oscar Hammerstein II (lyricist), you must watch “of all Broadway musicals South Pacific.

Watch how a US Navy nurse falls for a plantation owner. Watch how a young local Liat loves Lt. Joe Cable. Watch how they struggle through their own prejudices and try to emerge as successful lovers. It’s intriguing to watch two couples break through the chains of prejudice and war. The story is a real entertainer.

It would be a shame to miss this Pulitzer winner! Besides, this musical has four Tony Awards to its credit! How can you miss such a show? Winning so many prestigious awards implies there is something in this show that’s different from other Broadway musicals. “South Pacific” is, indeed, a show stealer!

Almost the entire city is flocking at the theater to watch how love mushrooms during war. The box office is being bombarded by a maddening crowd. People are eager to know what happens of the two couples and their love. They want to know whether the atrocities of war overshadow their innocent love or not.

Of all the Broadway musicals South Pacific is a little different. It’s taken from two short fables from James A. Michener’s book “Tales of the South Pacific.” A movie, too, was inspired from this musical in 1953.
