Broadway Play Cymbeline
SHAKESPEARE’S ROMANTIC TALE COMES TO THE STAGE! An impressive award winning cast brings this classic play to life. Cymbeline, one of Shakespeare’s final plays, began previews on November 1, 2007 at the Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre and is scheduled to officially open on December 2, 2007. This romantic epic runs for three hours with one intermission. It is a thought provoking play that carefully blends history, comedy and tragedy while telling a compelling story. Cymbeline is categorized in terms of Shakespeare as a “tragi-comedy”. It is a tale that uses the power of myth and magic. The setting is ancient England, Wales and Rome but because of the fairytale-like presence an exact time is never really relevant. As with any good fairytale the characters include a King Lear-like monarch, a wicked stepmother queen, a dastardly villain, a deceived husband and the kings daughter; the heroine princess Imogen who is said to be Shakespeare’s last great female role. Imogen defies her father and marries the man of her choice but because of certain circumstances and deceitful people their love is tested. There are several powerful themes throughout this complicated plot including love triumphing over deceit, things aren’t always as they appear to be and it is never too late to redeem oneself. The storyline takes some interesting twists and the resolution is quite satisfying for some of the characters. The more than capable ensemble brings these characters to the stage and gives them a life of their own – Shakespearean style. In the role of the princess is Tony nominated actress Martha Plimpton. She was most recently seen on Broadway in the epic production of The Coast of Utopia for which she was nominated for a Tony in 2007. Plimpton is also known for her notable film work including her roles in Mosquito Coast, Running on Empty and Parenthood. In the title role is veteran stage actor and two time Tony award winner John Cullum who was most recently seen on Broadway in the 2007 production of 110 in the Shade. He holds a remarkable theatrical resume including last years sold out production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas and several Shakespeare productions. Adding to the extraordinary talent of this cast is Tony award winner and popular television star Phylicia Rashad in the role of the wicked Queen. In addition to being well-known for her longtime role as Clair Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby show she is an accomplished stage actor. She has appeared in several Broadway productions including her Tony award winning role as Lena in A Raisin in the Sun, The Wiz and most recently Gem of the Ocean. Cymbeline is a rare opportunity to experience a full fledged Shakespeare production with a talented and well-known cast.
