Brief History Of New York TheaterBroadway, as we all know today, was established in the very early 20th century. In 1891, the first marquee that was electrically lit up was of a theater where Fifth Avenue crosses Broadway on 23rd Street. By 1901, the whole area was lit up by white lights and was known as the ‘Theater District.’

Musicals made their debut in 1915. By 1921, shows produced by and starring black actors were put on, with the first one being ‘Shuffle Along.’
The WW I saw the New York Theater movement rally around by raising more than half a million dollars for the Red Cross, through organized food drives, and other means. The era of depression badly hit New York with an estimated 25,000 people from the theater community losing their jobs.
Over the years, New York theater has put on shows, such as Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the musical masterpiece - A Chorus Line, among many others. Cats, which debuted in October 1982, and stopped production in September 2000, was the longest running show in the history of Broadway until January 2006, when The Phantom of the Opera, surpassed it with its 7,486th performance.
