BIG HAIR CONQUERS ALL!

This Tony award-winning musical opened on Broadway in August of 2002 at the Neil Simon Theatre where it is still delighting audiences today. With plenty of fun songs, bright lights, cool costumes and show stopping dance routines it is easy to see why Hairspray became an immediate Broadway sensation. The production is reminiscent of Grease and American Bandstand, and has a very nostalgic feel to it; especially if you are a baby-boomer.

The musical is based on the 1988 film by John Waters that starred Divine and at the time an unknown Ricki Lake. The story is set in the early 1960’s and takes place in Baltimore. Tracy Turnblad is a plus size teen with big hair, and her only passion in life is to dance. She wins a spot on a local television dance program, “The Corny Collins Show,” and is transformed from a social outcast to a teen celebrity. She then seeks to oust the reigning teen queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and launch a campaign to racially integrate the show. Can she accomplish all of this and still pursue her dancing dream?

The production was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and won eight including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score written for Theatre. It was clearly the season’s big winner both at the Tony’s and with audiences. The music is likable, the lyrics are fresh and witty, and the toe-tapping rhythms make for a fun experience. It is not uncommon for the audience to get up out of their chairs and dance to the music. The score utilizes the musical styles of the era including rock and roll, some gospel and R&B.

The role of Tracy’s lovable mother has always been played by a man. The role of Edna was originated by Harvey Fierstein who won the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal. Michael McKean, best known for playing Lenny on the sitcom “Laverne and Shirley,” has also taken a crack at the character. And, in the re-adapted 2007 musical film version the tradition was not broken as John Travolta graced us with his interpretation of this unforgettable woman. The movie also starred Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Hairspray is a feel-good show with social themes audiences can relate to. It tackles the issues of a girl with a need to fit in and the prejudices people deal with about looks, weight and skin color. It takes place in a time when change is imminent, and people must learn to adjust and accept. It is basically about a big girl with a big heart and big hair that brings even bigger laughs. Tracy tries to succeed in television and love while trying to be a dancing superstar. By the end of the show the audience is left with a warm feeling about this fantastic show!
