The Broadway show Memphis has been running since October 19, 2009. It is a critically acclaimed musical, which has already had played numerous sold-out engagements at the best American theaters, including the recent blockbuster at 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. David Bryan, a Bon Jovi founding member has given the Music & Lyrics for the show. Bryan is making his Broadway debut with this musical. Sergio Trujillo, of Jersey Boys’ fame, has done the choreography. And the Tony nominee Christopher Ashley is the director of this highly entertaining musical. The speed at which the tickets are selling for the show is proof of the audience having gone crazy for this brand new musical. The show is a perfect combination of a moving story, exciting staging, and dynamic music.

The Plot Crafted With Some Wonderful Tunes And Songs

Memphis on Broadway features an original score Byran. The fusion of Byran’s own contemporary sensibility with the early rock 'n' roll, rhythm & blues, and gospel results in some wonderful tunes. This is the story of Huey Calhoon, a young, white radio disc jockey based in Memphis. It is the period of 1950s when there was a huge conflict between the Whites and the Blacks. In that period, Huey finds his love for the Black (African-American) music. The unstoppable enthusiasm and on-air antics of Huey Calhoon succeeds in creating a new white audience for black music. The story is also packed with some wonderful dramatic consequences of his falling in love with Felicia (played by Montego Glover), a beautiful black singer.

The Award-Winning Creative Team

The lighting design of the Broadway show Memphis is by Howell Binkley of Jersey Boys fame. The costume design is by Paul Tazewell of In The Heights fame. The scenic design is by David Gallo of “Reasons to Be Pretty” fame. Both David Gallo and Howell Binkley are Tony Award winners while Paul Tazewell has been a Tony Award nominee. The show however has been produced on Broadway Barbara and Buddy Freitag and Junkyard Dog Productions in association with Dancap Productions and Demos Bizar Entertainment. The credit for the crowd-pleasing elements in this lively new musical goes to vigorous direction, athletic dance numbers, stirring vocals, and a highly talented cast.

The Discovery Of Rock And Roll

The popular belief is that rock & roll started with Elvis Presley. This is not true. Memphis on Broadway shows that it was actually born among black singers in underground nightclubs of Memphis. The wonderful dramatic sequences will also take you on a journey where you will see how white businessmen pirated this art in the form of mass entertainment.
