Directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento, the musical, is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, and music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. It opened on at the Gershwin Theater on October 30, 2003, and celebrates its three and a half years run next month in April. The hit musical opened with a pre-run at the Curran Theater at San Francisco on May 28, 2003, with the trial run closing on June 29. The show previewed on Broadway on October 8, 2003, with most of the original cast members.

The musical is loosely based on the novel by Gregory Maguire - The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The musical has been written as a prequel to the popular Wizard of Oz – long before the arrival of Dorothy. It is about two young women who meet in the Emerald City – one is intense, intelligent, and misunderstood, whereas the other is popular, beautiful and has ambitions. It is a story of how these friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North, respectively. If you are an admirer of Oz, this extravaganza of music and theatrics on Broadway will be irresistible. This well written book by Winnie Holzman is well directed, and Wicked has a sense of wit.

The musical and the original novel on which it is loosely based do not have much in common, except that they have used a section of the novel where Elphaba (the future Wicked Witch) and Glinda (the future Good Witch) meet each other at school, as the basis of their friendship. They have used many of the characters in the book, but with different situations.
