WHAT’S HAPPENING … BROADWAY! August 2009

The fall season for Broadway is quickly approaching and that is always an exciting time in New York City. New shows, big names and lots of opportunities to catch some really fantastic shows! Three shows are opening in September and all feature some pretty impressive actors. Don’t miss your chance to see these new and exciting productions.


Fall Openings…

After Miss Julie – This new dramatic play stars film actress Sienna Miller in the title role. It begins previews on September 18, 2009 at the American Airlines Theatre. The production is set in 1945 and is based on the August Strindberg classic play about sex and power. Miss Julie engages is a forbidden flirtation that quickly develops into a life or death struggle that she never say coming. The play is on a limited engagement run and is scheduled to close on December 6, 2009.

Wishful Drinking – Princess Leia comes to Studio 54 beginning September 22, 2009. Carrie Fisher brings her one woman true story to Broadway. The daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher recounts what it was like to be a cultural icon and a Hollywood legend all before the age of twenty. The audience gets a glimpse into her head and sees that her life was anything but perfect. Sometimes the party has to end. This one is definitely worth catching!

The Royal Family – This hilarious comedy comes to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on September 15, 2009 with an official start date of October 8, 2009. This clever production stars SNL alum Ana Gasteyer and stage favorites Stephen Collins and Tony Roberts. The play follows the Cavendishes, the famous family of stage stars, who make their living in the spotlight. What happens when there young starlet wants to quit the family business to pursue domestic bliss? This is a clever tale about theatrical manners and the toll it takes on the family. This is a limited run and is scheduled to close on December 13, 2009. Get your tickets soon.

As with every Broadway season a few shows must leave to make room for the next shot at brilliance. This month we say goodbye to The Little Mermaid. This theatrical masterpiece debuted in November 2007 and transformed the Lunt Fontanne Theatre into an underwater spectacular. It has been capturing the hearts of young princesses and princes ever since it opened. Based on the beloved Disney film and the traditional Hans Christian Andersen story The Little Mermaid mesmerized and dazzled many theatergoers performance after performance. There is still time to get your special little someone to this show, but hurry because it is scheduled to swim out to sea on August 31, 2009.
