February Broadway Shows
Broadway has a number of shows on its hallowed stages. Many of them last a few months, and some as much as 15 to 20 years! This coming February, there a number of popular and successful performances on Broadway. A look at two of the very popular shows already running on the stages of Broadway, and continuing through February:
The Color Purple – This hit musical is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the film by the same name by Steven Spielberg. Produced by Oprah Winfrey, this is a story of a woman, who, raped by her father and abused by her husband, overcomes adversity through her inner strength.
Mamma Mia! – This is a great musical for the fans of the Swedish pop sensation ABBA. Set on a Greek island, Mamma Mia! is the story of a young girl about to marry, who does not know who her father is. Thinking she would be able to figure out who her father really is, she invites three of her mother’s former lovers as likely candidates. The musical features 22 of the groups greatest hits, including Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes It All, Take A Chance on Me, Super Trouper, S.O.S., and Knowing Me, Knowing You, among others. Following few shows are opening in February 2007:
Journey’s End – On a very short run of six months, this play previews on February 8, opens on February 22 at the Belasco Theater, and closes on July 1. This is a story about a group of British officers in the trenches in St. Quentin, France, during World War I. Its humor, heroism and humanity confront the nature of war, and the story is as timely today as it was then.
Talk Radio – The show is previewing on February 9, and opening at the Longacre Theater on February 25. It is a portrait of a controversial late night radio talk show host, who is preparing to expand his popular talk show to a nationwide audience. This was an Off-Broadway sensation in 1987, and is expected to be a major show on Broadway, this season.
Prelude To A Kiss – This comedy is for a limited run, previewing on February 16, opening at the American Airlines Theater on March 18, and closing on April 22. Written by Craig Lucas of The Light in the Piazza fame, it is a story of a wedding that takes a startling turn. An uninvited guest kisses the bride, prompting the couple on a magical and a mystical journey. It is a story about hidden longings and the pure connection of love.
Curtains – Previewing on February 27, and opening on March 22 at the Al Hirschfeld Theater, Curtains is a funny new musical comedy about an unlucky star who dies on opening night during her curtain call. The lure of the theatre proves too much for the investigating officer, who after an unexpected romance, finds himself as interested in making the show a hit, as he is in solving the murder.
