WHAT’S HAPPENING … BROADWAY - MAY 13, 2007!
Now that the April showers have brought us May flowers it is the perfect time to come to New York and see a show. You are probably thinking with so many to choose from which one should you see? Audiences and critics are always raving about Phantom, Wicked, A Chorus Line and Les Miz, and any of the aforementioned are worth seeing at least twice! But, if new and different are what you seek then May is certainly the month for you because not only did the spring flowers arrive, but so did four new and exciting Broadway productions!
These four diverse and unique shows make their official debut this month and are already creating quite the Broadway buzz! Deuce is a touching new play about friendship, hidden secrets and the true meaning of life. It is a wonderful opportunity to witness two very talented stage legends in action. The show stars Tony-award winning actresses Angela Lansbury and Marian Seldes. This production marks Landsbury’s return to the stage after a more than twenty year hiatus. The romance drama, LoveMusik, is based on the true story of an intellectual German American composer and his muse. The tale of this very complicated couple makes for a very interesting theatrical presentation. Making its transfer from the London stage is the hit musical Coram Boy. This epic adventure is based on the award winning children’s book by Jamila Gavin about two orphans and the two very different paths fate chooses for them. The fourth show to open this his month is 110 in the Shade. This production stars four-time Tony- award winner Audra McDonald in the role of a 1930’s single woman on the verge of becoming an old maid. Can she find love before it’s too late? You’ll have to go and see to find out!
Whoa! Joey Lawrence will make his Broadway debut in the musical Chicago. He will fill the role of Billy Flynn from May 4 through June 17. Lawrence is best known for his roles in the hit sitcoms “Gimme a Break” and “Blossom” He was also a ballroom sensation in last season’s installment of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” Actor Harry Hamlin takes over the role two days after Lawrence’s stint ends. Good Luck to them both!
Another teen idol returns to the stage in a Disney classic. Singer Donny Osmond will reprise his role as the villain Gaston in the final performance of Beauty and the Beast. Disney’s longest running production will close after thirteen years on Broadway. The final show will take place on July 29, 2007 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The show is leaving to make room for another Disney classic the highly anticipated The Little Mermaid scheduled to open in 2008.
