New York City has produced lavish productions for kids as well. Most of the productions for kids have come from the stables of Disney. Disney’s extravaganzas for children's theater have been Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Tarzan, and Mary Poppins. These are the stories most kids grew up with. These musicals have also made the grown ups re-live their childhood memories of these characters in comics and animations. All these four musicals are currently playing in New York, and are going strong. Musicals For The Kids
Beauty and the Beast – This a great musical from Disney, based on the timeless story passed down from generations to generations. Beauty and the Beast at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre is a lavish musical adaptation of the Walt Disney’s 1991 animated film by the same name. This popular musical previewed on Broadway at the Palace Theater on March 9, 1994 and premiered on April 18, 1994. It began its performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on November 12, 1999, and has been running there since then.
The Lion King – This musical, based on Disney’s animated feature film, has completed more than nine years on Broadway. It opened at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theater in October 1997, to rave reviews. Nearly nine years later, on June 13, 2006, it moved to the newly refurbished theater – the Minksoff Theater - making way for Mary Poppins, another great musical from Disney. Though The Lion King tickets can be available from its box office, they are not so easy to come by.
Tarzan – After the success of musicals for kids – Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King – Disney brought its adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough’s Tarzan of the Apes to Broadway. There was an advance sale of nearly $20 million worth of Tarzan tickets. It has been on production at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, from March 24, 2006 onwards and all the shows are sold out and the theater is full of kids. On an average, about a third of the kids are under 12. Even for adults, Tarzan, the musical, brought back memories of the comic strips and a number of Tarzan movies that were made.
Mary Poppins – It is another great one of Disney’s productions. Based on the hit movie by the same name, Mary Poppins is great entertainment, especially for children. Opened at the New Amsterdam Theater in mid October 2006, Mary Poppins, the musical, has new songs added, along with the songs from the original movie.
