Theater tickets are the most sought after by theatergoers in New York City. Tickets are usually booked months in advance at the box office, and at times even a year in advance. This is because procuring your tickets is usually not easy. There always comes a time when you need to procure your theater tickets at the last minute. This may be difficult, but not impossible, if you know how.
Sourcing Tickets At The Last Minute
You can try some of the following ways to lay your hands on Broadway tickets at the last minute:
Lottery/Rush Tickets – A limited number of lottery tickets are sold before the show time. Lottery cards are distributed about 3 hours or so before the start of the show. The winners are announced about 2 hours before the show. These Broadway tickets are sold at reduced prices. There are certain discounted seats available that the producers are keen to sell. Not all theaters and neither do all shows offer such rush/lottery tickets. You need to check the show’s website or the theater’s box office. These Broadway tickets are available for cash only.
Standing Room Only (SRO) – For certain shows, certain theaters offer standing room only tickets. These are certain designated places in the theater, especially at the back of the auditorium, where one can watch the show, standing up. Such SRO tickets are only sold once the show has been completely sold out. These tickets also come highly discounted. You need to check the show’s website, or check with the box office to see if such tickets are available.
Of course, SRO tickets are not a good choice if you are entertaining out of town business clients!
There are a number of other sources from where you can arrange last minute Broadway tickets. However, these are risky affairs, and it is not advisable that you use them:
The Re-Sale Forums – You may get lucky and get in touch with someone who is trying to re-sell tickets as they are unable to attend on that particular night. Make sure that what you are buying are real tickets, with real seat numbers, and this is not someone out to rip you.
Try eBay – This is a popular site where many things are sold and bought. You may find someone trying to sell tickets for the show you are interested in, for the same reasons as above. Here too, you must exercise the same caution as you would when buying through a re-sale forum.
Buying From A Scalper - This method is not advised and it is certainly an unfair and corrupt practice. Unfortunately, scalping exists, and people are known to use scalpers at the last minute. You cannot be sure if the tickets are genuine or not.
