The 2011 debut of Catch Me If You Can Broadway musical has received favorable reviews in the press. The new stage show has been adapted from the screenplay which led to the 2002 hit film directed by Steven Spielberg. The story is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., a teenage runaway who cashed in millions through a check forging scam in the 1960's. The film included a talented cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as Hanratty. The Broadway musical stars Leo as Carl Hanratty and Aaron Tveit playing the lead role of Frank Jr. The production is full of fast paced adventures, comedic moments and entertaining songs along the way.
The Catch Me If You Can Broadway musical follows the original story quite closely. From Frank Abagnale Jr.'s troubled family life through his new found wealth posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a Georgia doctor and Louisiana attorney and parish prosecutor while perfecting his check fraud skills. Frank found the fast life and has grown very fond of it. From the fancy hotels and beautiful women, he seems quite reluctant to give it up, even with a dedicated FBI agent (Carl Hanratty) hot on his trail. The cat and mouse game between Frank and Carl seems to form a bond, almost a friendship and both find enjoyment in the challenges they face. Though Frank's escapades of running from the FBI are short lived, his skills as a check forger gain the respect from the FBI and prompt him for a position within the organization. Catch Me If You Can is a fact-based story originally written as an autobiography by Frank Abagnale . Frank sold the film rights to his book in 1980. In 1990 the film right were picked up by Paramount Pictures. In 1997 the film right were once again sold to Barry Kemp and work on the screen play began at DreamWorks with Jeff Nathanson. Speilberg (Co-founder of Dreamworks) signed on to produce the film and after struggles to find a directed to commit to the project took it on himself in August 2001. The film was marketed as "inspired by true events," leading one to believe the script is loosely based on all the facts. The film went on to be well received from top film critics around the world. The readings for the Catch Me If You Can Broadway musical began back in 2005. The cast at that time included Nathan Lane, Tom Wopat, Brandon Wardell and Matthew Morrison under the direction of Jack O'Brien. In July 2007 the production entered private workshops with O'Brien still directing. The musical was originally scheduled to debut on July 25, 2009 at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. The premiere was canceled due to a tragedy in actor Leo Butz (Carl Hanratty) family. Catch Me If You Can eventually opened on July 28, 2009 to favorable reviews and had its final curtain on August 16, 2009. At the end of the Seattle tryouts the production was picked up for Broadway to open at the Neil Simon Theatre on April 10, 2011. The Broadway production includes most of the Seattle cast, including Leo Butz as Carl Hanratty and Aaron Tveit as Frank Abagnale Jr. The Broadway production boasts a strong book written by Terrence McNally and Jack O'Brien directs. Songs include "The Pinstripes Are All That They See," "Someone Else's Skin," and "Live in Living Color."
