Frank Abagnale, Jr. comes from a broken home and decides to become a teenage runaway. He quickly leaves high school in pursuit of the "American Dream". Surviving on pure instinct and always seeking the next thrill, masquerading as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor and a lawyer. By the age of 19 Frank found fortune in cashing out millions of dollars in forged checks. His new found career provides a fast life filled with beautiful women and luxury. However, he soon becomes lost within his own game. Frank continues to push the boundaries of his scams leading the dedicated FBI agent Carl Hanratty hot on his trail. Frank seems to enjoy the challenge of keeping up with his beloved career as a con man while avoiding capture as does his nemesis. The two engage in a cat and mouse hunt which is both exciting and frustrating but always entertaining for the audience. The popular 2002 movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred the talented Leonardo DiCaprio as Abagnale and Tom Hanks as Hanratty. Other members of the all star cast included Christopher Walken, Amy Adams, Martin Sheen, and Nathalie Baye. The Broadway musical adaptation features most of the original cast from the Seattle tryouts which ran in 2009. The leading roles are played by Kerry Butler as Brenda Strong, Norbert Leo Butz as Carl Hanratty, Aaron Tveit as Frank Abagnale Jr and Tom Wopat as Frank abagnale Sr. The cast also includes Linda Hart, Nick Wyman, Rachel deBenedet, Brandon Wardell, Timothy McCuen Piggee, and Angie Schworer. Whom all were involved with the Seattle tryouts.
The Catch Me If You Can Broadway production features a book by Terrence McNally and a and a score from the creative team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The production has scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, and musical direction by John McDaniel; O'Brien and Mitchell are the director and choreographer. The songs include "Live in Living Color" by Frank Jr. and Company, "Don't Break the Rules" by Hanratty and Company, "Little Boy Be a Man" by Frank Sr. and Hanratty and "Fly, Fly Away" by Brenda.
The Broadway musical received mixed reviews after it's opened. Many of New York's top theatre critics responded favorably to the production overall. Most critics favored the book of by Terrence McNally, character-driven choreography and perfect sets with wonderful costume design.
