Rob McClure takes on the role of Charlie Chaplin at the Barrymore Theatre with an opening night scheduled for September 10, 2012. Chaplin is well known for being the "silent" movie actor and comedic genius of an era. For many it may seem strange or even a stretch to cover his story in the format of song and dance. Chaplin was, however, extremely musical, writing the musical scores for his films himself. The biography of Charlie Chaplin's life does fit quite well into a Broadway musical format, especially as his intriguing story unfolds. Chaplin's life started in squalor at a young age. He was forced to join the workforce by the age of then. His alcoholic father passed away, and his mother was ill. A few years later the sparks of genius began to fly as he could make it to vaudeville. He began to build a questionable reputation for his lust of actresses as well as strong political opinions. One of his most controversial works, “The Dictator," even had him exiled from the United States during the McCarthy era. Chaplin relocated from the U.S. to England during the 5050' after being accused of Communist sympathies. Still, Chaplin found his biggest success as a film actor and director in Hollywood. Chaplin began production with a run at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2010 billed as "Limelight." The title was later changed by the creative team to "Becoming Chaplin." The production received a January workshop in New York City. Producers quickly began working to bring the musical to the Broadway stage for the 2112 - 2013 seasons. The current production is no relation to an early 1981 script which attempted a Broadway run but ran into financial problems before being staged. The 2012 fall opening includes a cast of Rob McClure, Christiane Noll, Erin Mackey, Michael McCormick, Jenn Colella under the direction of Warren Carlyle. Previews for this open-ended run begins on August 21, 2012. While critical responses to the La Jolla Playhouse have been mixed, producers promise the Broadway production has been mildly reworked and streamlined for the big stage.
