First Appearance

Chicago musical tickets have been one of the hottest Broadway tickets ever since it made its first appearance. Chicago the musical was first performed in 1975. The musical is based on a play written by Maurine Dallas Watkins. Watkins was a reporter for the Chicago Tribune and the play was based on her coverage. Gwen Verdon read the play and wanted to create a musical based on the play. She approached Bob Fosse, her ex-husband, with the idea. Fosse approached Watkins for permission and was refused.

After the death of Watkins in 1969, Fosse obtained the right from her estate. The musical was finally produced in 1975 and it starred Chita Rivera as Velma Kelly, Gwen Verdon as Roxie Hart, and Jerry Orbach as Billy Flynn. Chicago musical tickets soon became very popular amongst theater goers.

A Story That Has It All

The musical is based in the roaring 1920s and has all the jazzy feelings of that era. Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart. She is a nightclub dancer who has murdered her unfaithful husband. It is also the story of Velma, who is also on death row for double murder. Billy Flynn, a slick lawyer, manages to get both of them out of jail and also manages to turn them into stars.

Chicago is a sexy musical extravaganza that has some great songs. “All That Jazz,” “Razzle Dazzle,” “Funny Honey,” “Mr Cellophane, “Nowadays” and “Class.” Along with some great songs, the musical has some of the best dances that you would have seen in a musical. No wonder Chicago musical tickets are always hot.

Chicago made its Broadway revival in 1997. In 1997, it won six Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical.
