Hwang's work does not focus on the 'ease" of basing the characters nor comedy within stereotypically accepted mainstream ideals. In other words, the American is not an arrogant idiot, and the Chinese is not all about work all the time. It is through this medium of not pulling out the standard tricks in which both the characters and comedic moments are able to build. The play is able then to build on it's shrewd, clever and razor-sharp scenes, which will have any audience in stitches! Mr. Hwang's new play can capture an important moment between two countries. Both are struggling to work together and learn about each other but with so many cultural differences, it becomes difficult. "Chinglish" is an inspired and hilarious look at this relationship. Chinglish got its start at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, IL. The early production ran from between June 18, 2011, until July 24, 2011. The "Goodman" production gained a quick audience and many positive reviews.
