Circle in the Square Tickets
The classic venue is considered to be one of the oldest producing theaters of its time in New York. It was found by Paul Libin (Managing Director), Theodore Mann (Artistic Director), and José Benjamín Quintero (Director and Producer), in 1951. In 1972, the Circle In The Square Theater company moved from Greenwich Village to its present location on 50th Street. This very small theater, with a 680-seat auditorium, shares its entrance with George Gershwin Theater, and is located under the Paramount Pictures building. It is one flight down from the street level, and can be accessed through the escalator or elevator.
The stage is usually configured as the Thrust stage, but can be configured in the theater-in-the-round configuration, also. It was the first new theater on Broadway in 40 odd years. Although a Broadway theater, it committed itself to present plays that were not normally produced on Broadway. Its audiences had a chance to see challenging presentations not seen elsewhere. This also gave many of America’s top actors a chance to perform demanding roles without any pressures. The Circle In The Square Theater encouraged the actors to respond to their desires to make bold and unconventional choices, and to explore plays that were not part of the popular repertory.
Productions Over The YearsThe over 150 productions of Circle In The Square Theater had presentations from Bellow, Capote, Moliere, Shakespeare, Steinbeck, Thomas, Wilder and Williams, that helped earn it a national reputation. It was through the aegis that the American audiences were introduced to Genet's The Balcony, Behan's The Quare Fellow, and Fugard's Boesman and Lena. It was also responsible for the revival of Euripides' The Trojan Women, Shaw's Heartbreak House, Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and Williams' The Glass Menagerie, Night of the Iguana, Streetcar Named Desire, The Rose Tattoo and Garden District, among many others.
Certain plays, such as Plays for Bleecker Street, and Morning, Noon and Night were written specifically for Circle in the Square Theater. Of the many plays that further enhanced its reputations were O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and A Moon for the Misbegotten.
The list of well-known actors who have performed on the stage of theater is unending. The actors who have appeared are: Elizabeth Ashley, Matthew Broderick, Richard Chamberlain, Julie Christie, Jill Clayburgh, Frances Conroy, Peter Falk, Rex Harrison, Dustin Hoffman, Nathan Lane, Rita Moreno, Al Pacino, Geraldine Page, Vanessa Redgrave, George C. Scott, Martin Sheen, Jamey Sheridan, George Segal, Eli Wallach, and Joanne Woodward, and the list is in no way exhaustive.
After 1998, the Circle in the Square Theater has been hosting excellent productions, currently playing at the theater is "Lombardi", based on the life of the inspirational coach.
