Coram Boy New York Tickets
HIT LONDON PLAY TRANSFERS TO BROADWAY! This epic adventure opens on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre in April. Coram Boy is based on the 2000 award-winning novel by Jamila Gavin. It is a fantastic theatrical experience with a highly emotional and rich storyline. This is a powerful drama which brings to light a hidden part of the 18th century, child cruelty and abuse. The play is set in 18th century England and centers on two orphans who get a second chance at life. Toby is rescued from an African slave ship while Aaron is the abandoned son of the heir to a great estate. The two are brought to the Coram Hospital for Deserted Children and are lead down two very different paths. The drama unfolds amidst murder any mayhem and has deliciously memorable characters including cold-hearted villains and evil aristocrats. At times the production takes on an almost gothic tone as some very dark truths and secrets are revealed. This show is coming to New York directly from London where it enjoyed a two time sold-out run. The stage version of the book debuted in London in November of 2005 and after much critical acclaim returned in late 2006 for a second run. Now, the production hopes to recreate that same magic and success on the Great White Way. The show boasts a unique cast of over forty performers where the twenty actors share the stage with a twenty member choral ensemble and a seven piece live chamber orchestra. They perform Handel’s “Messiah” as well as original music composed by Adrian Sutton. The spectacular score which consists of mainly classical choral music draws the audience directly into the plot and keeps them there until the final curtain. Having the choir and orchestra on stage while the actors are performing gives this production a different flavor then what the audience may be used to and creates a magical theater experience. The music seems to set the tone for the entire show and is seamlessly intertwined throughout the plot. Some of the themes of Coram Boy can be very dark at times, but ultimately the story ends up being uplifting. It is a tale of fathers and sons that begins with abandonment and abuse, but somehow moves to trust and devotion. It is a long and hard journey for the characters with hard lessons that must be learned, but in the end it all seems worth it.
