It was November 6, 2007 when Cry Baby musical was premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse. It ran till December 16. Now, in March 2008, this musical is here again to entertain the audience with its typical love story with an extraordinary twist.

John Waters had produced a movie called “Cry Baby” in the year 1990. The movie had Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake, and Iggy Pop. “Cry Baby” musical is based on the same movie. It’s directed by Mark Brokaw and choreographed by Rob Ashford.

Mark Brokaw is no ordinary director. He has to his credit shows like “Reckless”, “The Constant Wife”, and “How I Learned to Drive.” Same is true for Rob Ashford. This fantastic choreographer has won a Tony Award for “Thoroughly Modern Millie”, a super hit Broadway show, and Tony nomination for the shows “The Wedding Singer” and “Curtains.”

Cry Baby musical is a portrayal of teen culture of 1950s, their grumpy parents, and lovers’ lives during that time. The story revolves around Wade “Cry Baby” Walker. He’s a typical bad guy. He falls in love with a local gal, Allison. She’s from a good family. However, the leather jacket charm of Walker draws Allison towards him. She decides to bond with Walker and see how bad he is. The scenes are set under the backdrop of 1954 Baltimore. The musical features a terrific music score by Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum.

The lead character of Wade Walker is played by James Snyder. He has debuted on Broadway through this show. Allison Vernon Williams, the female lead character, is played by Elizabeth Stanley. You can also watch the amusing grandmother of Allison. It’s played by the magnificent dame of comedy, Harriet Harris.

Other members of the star cast includes Lacey Kohl as Wanda, Cristen Paige as Mona, Alli Mauzey playing the role of Lenora, Carly Jibson as Pepper, Chester Grefory II playing Dupree, and Christopher J.Hanke.

The creative team of Cry Baby musical includes Eric Christian, Cameron Adams, Ashley Amber, Michael D. Jablonski, Nick Blaemire, Michael Buchanan, Colin Cunliffe, Stacey Todd Holt, Allison Spratt, Joanna Glushak, Courtney Laine Mazza, Torrey Ross, Marty Lawson, Eric Sciotto, Spencer Liff, Charlie Sutton, Richard Poe, Peter Matthew Smith, and Mayumi Miguel.

Thomas Meehan is regarded as the most reliable “weapon” of Broadway. He wrote for the humor column for New York magazine. He took a break from the magazine to write some of the most smashing hit shows on Broadway like “Annie”, “The Producers”, “Hairspray”, and “Young Frankenstein.” Why are we telling you this? Because Meehan is the one who has written the musical show “Cry Baby”!
