It is not often that one gets a chance to buy the Cymbeline NYC tickets. This play has been one of Shakespeare's most controversial works. In fact, many people believe that he never wrote it at all! Whether you love it or hate it, it is hard to escape the buzz that Cymbeline creates when it hits the stage.

A Strong Divide

Cymbeline was written by Shakespeare and is usually grouped with his tragedies, though it is technically hard to classify this particular piece. Cymbeline is a mix of comedy, tragedy and romance. While it was immensely popular during its time, it was particularly during the last century that the play began to stir up controversy. The biggest bone of contention is the theory that Shakespeare did not write it at all, since there are so many aspects to it that are distinctly un-Shakespearean. Others claim that Shakespeare simply wrote it to amuse himself and never meant it to be a serious piece.

Today, there is a definite divide regarding the play. Some claim it is one of Shakespeare's most complex pieces while others feel that its complexity borders on the absurd. Still, there remains a high demand for Cymbeline NYC tickets. The last time Cymbeline came to Broadway was in 1923, when it played 15 shows. Many people are interested to see how the piece will be interpreted today- will it be able to stand the test of time like Shakespeare's other pieces?

Roles To Excel In

Interestingly enough, while Cymbeline on the whole has not been very popular, a number of star actors have excelled in their portrayals of certain characters in the play. This can be dated back to 1896, when celebrated actress Ellen Terry played Imogen, in what was one of her last performances. Peggy Ashcroft also excelled in the role of Imogen, so much so that the subsequent excellent portrayals by Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench were compared to Ashcroft's performance.

Those looking forward to seeing the show will also be interested in seeing who portrays the roles of the scheming Iachimo, the evil Queen, Posthumus and the king, Cymbeline. These have never been easy characters to portray and Cymbeline's production history is littered with the names of formidable actors who simply could not carry their roles.

Cymbeline NYC has often been criticized simply because the play is too complicated. Many of Shakespeare's plays thrive on the knots of scheming, secrets and disguises. In this play however, the majority of threads unravel in the final scene. This is primarily why the critics differ over the theatrical worth of Cymbeline. In any case, it remains one of the most difficult plays to perform. In the past, many directors have tried experimenting with minimalism in the piece. Since the setting of the play shifts drastically, Cymbeline has always been a challenge for set designers as well.
