Dan Zanes History
Born in Exeter, New Hampshire in 1961, Dan Zanes started to play the guitar at the age of 8. While at college, in 1981, he and Tony Lloyd started a band known as Del Feugos. Dan Zanes was the lead guitarist of this garage-style pop band with Tony Lloyd as the bassist, and played in ‘lofts, bars, small art galleries, clubs, barns, college dining halls, fraternity houses, gymnasiums, auditoriums, and, finally, big theaters.’
The group made several records — The Longest Day (1984), Boston, Mass (1985), Stand Up (1987), Smoking in the Fields (1989) — and had a hit single, ‘Don’t Run Wild.’ Del Feugos broke up in 1991, and Dan Zanes went solo for a short time. In 1994, he formed the Dan Zanes Trio with Mitchell Froom and drummer Jerry Marotta.
After his daughter was born, he realized that he enjoyed making music that families could enjoy together, and started making home made CDs with ‘friends,’ such as Sheryl Crow, Philip Glass, Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega and Debbie Harry. . . . And so was born Dan Zanes and Friends. Dan Zanes can play a variety of musical instruments, such as ukulele, guitar, mandolin, banjo and harmonica, auto-harp, and a little piano.
Dan Zanes enjoys playing music and performing in concerts in front of families, more than in adults only shows.
Dan Zanes and Friends are making their Broadway debut at The New Victory Theater, early next year. The New Victory Theater, a beautifully restored Broadway landmark is a small and intimate 499-seat theater, just for kids. It offers the best in children theater.
The New Victory Theater was built in 1900 by Oscar Hammerstein and was named the Theater Republic. During WWII, it was renamed the Victory, in a burst of patriotic fervor. By the 1970s, it was popular as an XXX-rated movie house. The Victory was renovated, and opened in December 1995 as the New Victory Theater.
