Dividing The Estate
FAMILY TALE MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT! This family comedy/drama makes its Broadway premier at the Booth Theatre for previews on October 23, 2008 with an official start date of November 20, 2008. Dividing the Estate, written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote, portrays a family on the verge of major changes that will affect their future immensely. The play focuses on the Gordon family of the fictional Harrison, Texas. They have enjoyed years of wealth and privilege but all that is about to change. Set in 1987 during a tumultuous time when plummeting oil and land values took an economic toll on many especially in Texas. While the family is feeling the effects they must decide whether to divide the estate or leave things as they are. This eccentric family is on the verge of realizing that the estate in question is no longer worth what it used to be. Foote, the author of the play, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his work The Young Man from Atlanta and often writes about small town America and the fascinating people one can find there. Dividing the Estate made its acclaimed off-Broadway premiere last season and the entire thirteen member ensemble will be reprising their roles in the Broadway production. Featured in the cast is veteran television actor Gerald McRaney who is probably best known for his eight season stint on Simon and Simon, Major Dad and Jericho. He has also starred in such television films as Not Our Son (1995) and Ike: Countdown to D-Day (2004). Also in this powerful cast is Elizabeth Ashley, Penny Fuller, Arthur French and the playwright’s daughter Hallie Foote. The show revolves around the main theme that this family must deal with their past issues so that they can finally move forward. Although set in 1987 the material is quite timely considering what is going on today in the financial world. The outstanding cast delivers the dialogue effortlessly while all working with such a great chemistry that it is hard to believe that they are not a real family surviving the years together. Dividing the Estate is a limited engagement that runs two hours with one intermission. Get your Dividing The Estate tickets soon for this masterpiece as it is scheduled to close January 4, 2009.
