The play is written by French playwright Marc Camoletti. His latest work has been staged in France and London before making it to the big stage of Broadway for 2012. The farce ran in Paris for a little more than two years under the title Pyjamas Pour Six. The English speaking rights were then invested in by London's producer Mark Furness that contracted playwright Robin Hawdon to do a serious rework of the play. The English adaptation opened in the West End at the Apollo Theatre in March 1991, directed by Peter Farago and starring Simon Cadell as Robert, Su Pollard as the chef Suzette, Jane How as Jaqueline and John Quayle as Bernard. Reviews were overall favorable.
In a restored French farmhouse about a two-hour drive from Paris, Bernard is longing to send his wife, Jacqueline, to her mothers for the weekend, in hopes, he can romance his mistress, Suzanne, a French model. Bernard has employed a Cordon Bleu chef, Suzette, and as an alibi asked his friend Robert to supper.To spend the weekend with his stylish French lover, Bernard packs his wife off to her mothers, invites his best mate to provide an alibi and hires a gourmet chef to create a brilliant evening. When all the characters come together and secrets are revealed the play takes off, providing a ton of laughs along the way.
Don't Dress For Dinner Broadway is a Roundabout Theater Company production. The play is put together a bit better than the previous "Boeing Boeing." John Tillinger directs a fun and talented cast including Ben Daniels, Patricia Kalember, Adam James, Jennifer Tilly, David Aron Damane, and Spencer Kayden.
