Big Names Head to NYC this Fall!

This season’s most anticipated production is scheduled for previews at the John Golden Theatre on October 7, 2010. Driving Miss Daisy starring Tony Award Winners James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave opens officially on October 25, 2010. Alfred Uhry’s Pulitzer Prize winning production hasn’t been seen on Broadway since the late eighties when Morgan Freeman held the role of the African-American chauffer to Dame Wendy Hiller’s Miss Daisy.

The play details the relationship between about the relationship of an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn, from 1948 to 1973. When Daisy, a widowed, 72-year-old woman living in Atlanta, is diagnosed as too old to drive, her son hires Hoke to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon develops into a deep, life-altering friendship that transcends all the social, class and stigmas placed between them. This original production first debut off-Broadway in 1987 and starred Morgan Freeman who later went on to star alongside Jessica Tandy in the 1990 Academy Award winning movie of the same name. This is the first time in Broadway history that screen legends Jones and Redgrave will be joining forces. Four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines will also join the cast in the role of Boolie Werthan. His Broadway credits include Gypsy (2008), The Heidi Chronicles (1989), She Loves Me (1994) and Contact (2000). He was also Tony-nominated in 2007 for his work in the revival of Journey's End.

In keeping with last season’s trend, shorter plays are being put on with big name actors in the spotlight. This proved quite successful earlier this year with A Steady Rain starring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. The running time for Driving Miss Daisy is ninety minutes with no intermission. But, for this play, it isn’t about quantity. No, here you’re getting quality. It’s all about the content of the play, the drama, the storyline and the spectacular cast selling the show. This truly is a rare opportunity to witness this revival, the first one since its debut, with this stellar ensemble. The production is being directed by David Esbjorson.

Driving Miss Daisy Broadway tickets are on sale now for this sensational production. If you’re thinking about seeing this one try and do it soon because it’s on a sixteen week limited engagement and it’s scheduled to close on January 29, 2011. It’s also important to mention that this production doesn’t follow the traditional Broadway schedule. The performance schedule will be Monday and Wednesday-Saturday at 8 PM, and Tuesday at 7 PM with matinees Wednesday and Saturday at 2 PM.
