The Drowsy Chaperone Tickets
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SHOWS ON BROADWAY! This original comedy premiered on Broadway in May of 2006 at the Marquis Theater. The show is both a tribute and a parody to the American musicals of the 1920’s.The Drowsy Chaperone is a brand new show that is not based on a play or a movie, and is not a revival. This refreshing production is a show within a show and is told through a narrator known simply as man in chair. The story begins with our narrator, a man sitting in his chair in his New York apartment. He is feeling a bit blue so he decides to play a recording of his favorite musical: the fictitious Gable and Steins The Drowsy Chaperone. All of a sudden his imagination kicks in, and out of nowhere the recorded overture turns into a live 15-piece orchestra. His dull apartment literally transforms into a Broadway stage and the musical comes to life around him. The brilliant set design bursts into a colorful setting as the narrator guides the audience through this witty production. The show begins with Robert and Janet who are about to be married. Janet is under the eye of her drowsy (intoxicated) chaperone whose job is to keep the bride and groom apart until the nuptials. This is when the fun begins and the audience is treated to one mishap after another. The show is a hilarious tale of a Broadway star who wants to marry and give up show biz. Her producer is desperately trying to sabotage the wedding. Will he succeed? The musical also tells the back stories of the suave, playboy groom, the bride’s chaperone, who always manages to have a martini in her hand, the Latin lover, and the two gangsters who are disguised as pastry chefs. All of these characters make for a very interesting and entertaining show. They are all rather cheery and all have an intriguing back story. There is also plenty of opportunity for the actors to display their physical comedy talents. This break out comedy was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and won five. Among the Tony’s the show took home were Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design of a Musical. The production has won several other awards including five Drama Critics Circle Awards and four Outer Critics Circle Awards. The show has been recognized for its score, set, design and direction. The Drowsy Chaperone is a vintage show with colorful characters, witty dialogue and an entertaining plot. The audience is drawn in from the moment the orchestra begins to play. This light-hearted production is fresh and original, and is also a successful attempt at staging a musical within a comedy. It is being described by critics and audiences as the funniest show on Broadway.
